Health Benefits of Restorative Gardens

Lifestyle Wellness News

News and Notes
Oct. 20, 2009   Vol.6,  Issue 17

October seems to have arrived early this year! Yet it feels like December in NYC. Fall is a very lovely tme of the year for me. The color of foliage is magnificent and the brisk air is invigorating.

October is also a busy month for meetings,  classes and the beginning of planning for the new year.

What are you planning for wellness? Massage therapy is definitely on my list of accomplishment.

This past weekend I spent time at the Japanese Autumn Garden. Not only was the exhibition beautiful, it was also invigorating (cold & windy) and restorative.

You can view pics here!

Enjoy!!

Food Tidbits

Walnut Pate is easy and quick to make! It can be rolled into balls and used instead of meatballs. It can also be eaten as a dip with crudites. This recipe is from my new raw foods cookbook.

the only advance preparation required is to soak the walnuts for 4–6 hours. I soaked mine for 4 hours. Makes 2 servings.

  • 1 cup soaked raw walnuts
  • 1 TBS. fresh lemon juice
  • 1tsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp. tamari
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • Dash salt
  • 1 TBs. minced fresh parsley
  • 1 TBS. minced onion

Place the first six ingredients in a food processor and process into a past. Transfer to a small bowl, stir in te parsley and onion and mix well. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. the pate will keep for five days.

Fiber

Fiber is an ingredient that is very important to weight management and overall general health.

In addition to containing good fat, one half of an avocado contains 6.7 grams of fiber. A previous issue of this news letter contained a recipe for guacamole. Avocado can also be used to make pesto, mash and spread it on toast ( you can top that with sliced tomato), dice it in a salad, add to a sandwich and can be used to make a pie. How about that? You get the good fat, fiber and dessert!

How are You?

H1N1 has dominated a major of the news media lately. So much so that it has created a mini panic about the upcoming flu season. The interesting part of all the media information is that there are TWO vaccines. One vaccine is for the seasonal  influenza caused by influenza A & B and H1N1, previously called swine flu.

Five target groups has been designated for initial H1N1 immunization. Are you in one of these groups?

  • pregnant women
  • household contacts of babies younger than 6 months
  • health care & emergency medical personnelpeople aged 6 months to 24
  • people between 25 and 64 who ave chronic medical conditions
  • Speak to your NP, PA or MD primary care provider regarding immunization.
